Welcome to the prof. Anton Došen Foundation!
Prof. Anton Došen (1939-2023) made significant contributions to the mental health of people with intellectual disabilities. He is regarded as a pioneer in this field, and his ideas have been embraced both nationally and internationally.
Our goal: to continue the groundbreaking work of Anton Došen in improving the quality of life for individuals with mental and behavioural problems, with a specific focus on the developmental-dynamic model and emotional development.
Anton Došen on emotional development
Anton Došen emphasized that all children, regardless of their developmental level, can be happy—provided their basic emotional needs are properly understood and met by their environment.
He developed the ‘Scale for Emotional Development’ (SEO), an instrument that helps professionals understand and address the emotional needs of people with intellectual disabilities. This model is now widely applied in healthcare, forensic care, education, and youth services in Flanders and the Netherlands.
Third Anton Došen Award presented
During the symposium ‘Emotional Development Extended‘ on 19 December 2024 in Ghent, SENS-EO awarded the 3rdAnton Došen Prize for innovative good practicesin the area of emotional development. More information about it, you will find here (in Dutch).

7 May 2026: Seminar on Advanced Aspects of Emotional Development (SEO/EO) in people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD)
On 7 May 2026, in Liebenau (Germany), the 5th Seminar of St Lucas-Clinic (Stiftung Liebenau), EAMHID, NEED and the Prof. Anton Došen Foundation will take place with lectures of a high degree of practical relevance, aimed at all professionals serving people with IDD, but especially at front-line staff providing primary care to clients with IDD.

Fortior inspiration booklet
On November 15, 2023, Fortior organized a symposium in collaboration with Flemish and Dutch professionals in memory of the life and work of Anton Došen. On that occasion, an inspiration booklet was compiled about Anton’s impact on the work of care professionals with their clients.
Tribute in Finland
The establishment of our Foundation was announced in September 2023 during the ‘Tribute to Anton Došen’ at the 14th European Association for Mental Health in Intellectual Disability (EAMHID) Congress. Anton was the Founder and Honorary President of the European Association. Our Foundation supports and aims to contribute to realising the EAMHID recommendations for the future.

- De SEO-V² is uit!
Nu aangevuld met fase 6 ‘sociale individuatie’ voor de leeftijdsfase van 12 – 18 jaar. De SEO-V² is bedoeld voor diagnostiek en beeldvorming bij mensen met een verstandelijke beperking en/of psychische problematiek. Daarnaast is het ook toepasbaar in andere sectoren zoals het (speciaal/buitengewoon) onderwijs, de ouderen-, jeugd- en forensische zorg. Het helpt bij het begrijpen van psychische en gedragsproblemen en ondersteunt het diagnostisch proces.

- Emotionele ontwikkeling van personen met een verstandelijke beperking
Dit basisboek biedt een geactualiseerd model van emotionele ontwikkeling, schetst de nieuwste wetenschappelijke inzichten en beschrijft hoe deze vertaald kunnen worden naar praktische ondersteuning. Daarnaast geeft het een aanzet tot een verruiming van het denkkader naar andere doelgroepen en andere sectoren.

- De liefdevolle revolutie van Anton Došen
Dit Liber Amicorum is geschreven door vrienden en collega’s die Došen’s werk willen voortzetten. Van beschouwend tot praktisch, wetenschappelijk tot persoonlijk en van terugkijkend naar vooruitblikkend. Met theorievorming, onderzoek, praktijk en beleid, door het oog van de meester en bijdragen van meer dan 30 vrienden en collega’s.

- De derde uitgave van de SEO-R2 is uit!
Anton Došen ontwikkelde in 1990 een eerste experimenteel Schema voor de schatting van het niveau van de emotionele ontwikkeling (SEO). Op basis daarvan en onder zijn supervisie werden de SEO-R en SEO-R2 ontwikkeld.

- Het onmisbare standaardwerk voor de hulpverlening
Er is veel kennis beschikbaar rondom psychische stoornissen en probleemgedrag bij mensen met een verstandelijke beperking, maar toepassing ervan in de praktijk is vaak een hele uitdaging. Anton Došen vertaalt op basis van uitvoerig literatuuronderzoek en ruime klinisch-psychiatrische praktijkervaring bestaande theoretische en wetenschappelijke inzichten naar praktisch handelen in de hulpverlening.
